Hello, prospective world language learners,

Welcome to Discere Aude!

Discere Aude is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides underprivileged students with the opportunity to learn world language and culture, including the Latin language and Greek mythology, Spanish language and culture, and French language and culture. Many schools in the United States do not have sufficient funding to provide their students with a world language education. In March 2014, after taking almost four years of Latin and becoming inspired by her own Latin teacher Dr. Andre Stipanovic, Catherine Jiang founded the student teaching group to expose underprivileged students to the beauty of world language and culture.

All our services are free of charge. Together, we are going to explore all the aspects of the world languages: grammar, vocabulary, and translation. Together, we are going to delve deeply into world culture. In 2014, Discere Aude partnered with Lumin Lindsley Park Community School as its first project to establish a summer Latin program at the school for underprivileged students living in Dallas, Texas. In 2015, Discere Aude established multiple world language programs at four schools in the Dallas area: Latin language and Greek mythology at St. Anthony Academy; Latin language and Greek mythology at Lakewest Family YMCA; Spanish language and culture and French language and culture at Wesley Rankin Community Center; and Latin language and Greek mythology, Spanish language and culture, and French language and culture at Lumin Lindsley Park Community School. We recruited 9 teacher volunteers from The Hockaday School, and were able to impact the lives of almost 160 students in the summer of 2015.

World languages are the basis of the English language today, with the majority of all English words derived from the world languages. Learning these world languages can help one's vocabulary and facilitate the learning of the five Romance languages. We love language, and we hope through our summer programs we can encourage underprivileged students to "discere aude," to dare to learn, to put themselves out there and be enthused to learn world language and culture. We hope that we can share our passion for language with others who have not been granted the opportunity to have a world language education.

All our activities are funded by donations of our directors and the general public. We would like to encourage everyone to donate to Discere Aude, so that we can offer more free world language programs to more students and extend our reach through more projects. All contributions and donations are tax deductible.
